Boil Water Advisory for a Main Break 12/11/2018

This is a courtesy notification from Carolina Water Service Inc of North Carolina, your local water provider for the Whispering Pines subdivision. Customers may experience periods of low pressure and/or outages in the distribution system due to a water main break in your area.  Periods of low or no pressure in the distribution system increases the potential for back siphonage and introduction of bacteria into the water system.

No problem has been detected in the water; however, as a precautionary measure, it is advised that when water is restored consumers boil all water used for human consumption (including, drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes and food preparation). As an alternative, bottled water may be used.  The North Carolina Division of Water Resources Public Water Supply Section has been contacted concerning this event.Vigorous boiling for one minute should kill any disease-causing organisms that may be present in the water.

This office is strongly urging the water consumers to conserve water whenever possible.  Customers will be notified by a second phone notification message once the Boil Advisory has been rescinded.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may have cause and appreciate your patience.  If you should have any questions or concerns, please contact our Customer Service Department at 1-800-525-7990, again that number is 1-800-525-7990.

Winter Weather Announcement for December 7, 2018

The Carolina Water Service, Inc. of North Carolina (CWSNC)  team is preparing for the upcoming winter weather anticipated to begin December 8th through December 10th.

Assets (generators, fuel) used for keeping your water and wastewater systems working during weather-related storms are being prepared throughout all potentially impacted service areas.

In the event there are outages, customers will be notified via a VOICE REACH by phone. Please be patient!

Staff will work as quickly as possible to restore services in the event of an outage. Due to an increase volume of customer calls during the winter storm, the Customer Service Department may need extra time to take your call.

Announcements will also be placed on the CWSCN Twitter and Facebook pages – @CarolinaWaterNC and on our website at https://www.myutility.us/carolinawaterservicenc.

Now is also the time to prepare your family and home for any upcoming winter weather. Stay tuned to your local weather provider and do not drive unless absolutely necessary.

Locking Lids Update

Recently, Carolina Water Service of North Carolina, Inc (CWSNC) installed new water meter boxes with locking lids on your property. CWSNC realizes this change may be an inconvenience and would like to address some concerns that have been received.

Safety remains one of CWSNC’s primary concerns, and access to the equipment that delivers your drinking water needs to be restricted to authorized personnel only. This initiative will become the new normal across CWSNC’s systems and your transition was completed in conjunction with the water main replacement project in an effort to avoid future disturbance of your property.

In the future, CWSNC will begin a transition to automated meter technology, which will allow improved accuracy in gathering readings by eliminating human error as well as allow for a more continuous monitoring method to discover abnormal usage. This project will involve installing new meters as well as an electronic transmitting device and will represent a significant financial investment. As with any electronic device, these meters will be more prone to damage if not handled correctly.

If you suspect a leak for any reason, locate a leak in your yard, or need to have a scheduled disconnection of service, please contact CWSNC Customer Service at 1-800-525-7990 and a representative will respond. In the event that you have a leak inside your home that is causing property damage, you may also contact the Village of Whispering Pines Fire or Police Departments. CWSNC has provided both agencies a key to access the meter boxes in the event of an emergency situation.  We recommend that you arrange to have a valve installed directly behind the meter box so that you are able to turn off your water if needed.

CWSNC remains committed to providing the best possible product and service to our customers, and these changes will contribute towards that goal. Please feel free to contact us if you have further questions.

Respectfully,
Dana Hill
Regional Manager

Update about your water quality

Residents from Whispering Pines, Southern Pines and parts of Pinehurst have been complaining lately of poor water quality in the aftermath of Hurricane Florence in September.

A number of residents — all of whom get their water from the town of Southern Pines — have sent in pictures of water that is yellow, brown and even green in color, and some have said the water has a sulfuric smell.

Town officials issued a statement Thursday afternoon about the water issues. In that statement, the town said that “the water is, and has been, perfectly safe to consume and utilize despite any discoloration.”

The statement:

“The Town of Southern Pines has received a number of complaint calls regarding tinted water following the events of Hurricane Florence.

“First and foremost, the Town’s potable water is, and has been, perfectly safe to consume and utilize despite any discoloration.

“The Town of Southern Pines utilizes Drowning Creek (headwaters of the Lumber River Basin) as its sole source of drinking water. This stream flow has been greatly impacted by the most recent hurricane and tropical storms delivering significant amounts of rainfall to our area. As we monitor this flow, we are recording a significant increase in Drowning Creek iron concentrations. These iron concentrations are causing increased color in our available water as the stream flows recede. Our treatment process is removing the available iron but may leave behind a slight color visible once final chlorination takes place. Even though we have increased our treatment chemicals to improve this iron and organics removal, you may notice a slight color to the water as we continue to treat the water and flush the system. The coagulant chemicals we routinely utilize are successfully removing all organics and other components normally found in our stream flows. We are aggressively monitoring the Southern Pines Treatment facility as well as collecting monitoring samples from a number of points throughout the distribution system. All parameters continue to be found within the expected values. Again, the Town’s water continues to be safe for drinking and all other uses.

“We are expediting this process with increased water flows through community fire hydrants and will continue to adjust treatment to mitigate any color concerns.

We thank you for your patience and will keep you informed of any changes as we go through this process.
